“This iPad thing has taken the world by storm,” said Ted Schadler, vice president and principal analyst at Forrester Research and co-author of “Empowered,” which explores how employees use new technology. “It came in as a consumer product, and very quickly the people who actually bought them were businesspeople.”

Last month, Apple said it sold 3 million iPads within 80 days of its release. The company may sell 9.7 million iPads in 2010, says Shaw Wu, an analyst at Kaufman Bros. in San Francisco.

More than half – 52 percent – of 770 smart phone users surveyed by Zogby International said they would most likely use a tablet device like the iPad to do work. The study, commissioned by Dublin software company Sybase, was released March 23.

“A lot of businesses right now are in experimentation with these devices,” said Dan Shey, practice director for enterprise at ABI Research in Oyster Bay, N.Y.

Many companies may keep their distance from tablet computers, which boast smaller screens and don’t allow switching back and forth between tasks as quickly as bigger machines. Apple rivals, including Hewlett-Packard and Cisco Systems, are getting into tablets, too – so the iPad-maker’s lead may narrow.

For now, workplace adoption of the iPad stands to benefit Apple while undermining rival makers of computers that run Microsoft’s Windows operating system. Many companies initially chafed at letting employees use iPhones for business amid concerns that it might not keep corporate data secure. That resistance ebbed after Apple released a version of iPhone software in 2008 with beefed-up security and better support for corporate e-mail.

With their smaller screens, inability to multitask and lack of keyboards, tablets may not soon replace bigger computers for many work-related tasks. The iPad’s display is 9.7 inches. By 2015, less than one-fourth of personal computers sold will be tablets, Forrester says.

As popular as the iPad may be for businesses now, it may soon face competition from Hewlett-Packard, Dell, LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics, which plan their own tablet computers. Cisco said last week that it will release a tablet that will be able to handle high-definition videoconferencing and may be available in early 2011.

Some companies may also be reluctant to entrust their data to the iPad after a breach on the AT&T website revealed the e-mail addresses of as many as 114,000 iPad users. Apple takes pains to keep its products secure in part by carefully vetting the applications that can be downloaded onto it.

Still, the process is “not foolproof, it will be subverted eventually,” said Mikko Hyppnen, chief research officer of Helsinki security firm F-Secure.

Reservations aside, Wells Fargo saw early on how quickly the iPad might take hold among business clients the weekend the device was released.

Finance executives of large companies – those that generate more than $50 million in revenue – accessed corporate Wells Fargo accounts with iPads, says Amy Johnson, a Wells Fargo vice president who works on the company’s online portal and mobile strategy. A finance official or account representative could use a mobile device like the iPad to approve multimillion-dollar wire transfers, she explains.

Johnson demonstrated one of the iPads bought by Wells Fargo during a May conference. She says she now carries the iPad with her everywhere.

Her fellow Wells Fargo executive, Minich, meanwhile, is waiting for an iPad after her boss made off with the one she expected to be assigned to her.

(CNN) — When Trevor Blackwell, CEO of a company called Anybots, wants to know what his employees are up to, he sends a robot to their cubicles.

“I can see if people are busy on something — and then won’t interrupt them,” he said this week. “Or, you know, if they’re doing something that looks interesting, or if they look stuck, I’ll have a conversation with them.”

This isn’t your standard “Office Space” conversation. Blackwell boots up a “telepresence robot” — which looks like a combination between a Segway and Johnny 5 from those “Short Circuit” movies — to talk to his employees from his home, 10 miles from Anybots’ office in Mountain Home, California.

The 5-foot-6, 35-pound robot contains a video camera, a still camera and a microphone. From a laptop, Blackwell can see everything the robot sees. He hears what the robot hears. And, when he talks, the robot projects his voice.

He drives the robot, called QB, with his computer keyboard. A sensor stops it from running into doors and tables. The robot zips around at 3.5 miles per hour, and its battery lasts up to 8 hours, or the length of a typical human workday, he said.

Watch the company’s demo video, and this will all make more sense

Blackwell says that this is how the office of tomorrow will work. Within a year or so, he says, every office in Silicon Valley, California, will have about one telepresence robot for every 10 employees.

His is one of several companies trying to push this idea of the robot-infused workplace into reality. Others companies include RoboDynamics, WowWee and iRobot.

Anybots’ QB robot is available for pre-order now. It ships to customers in the fall.

At $15,000, the QB is designed for commercial clients now, Blackwell said, but he thinks consumer robots aren’t too far off. People could use them to go on remote vacations, he said, touring the streets of a faraway country or interacting with the locals without ever leaving their bedrooms.

CNN spoke with Blackwell about the QB, the robot-laden future of the modern American office and robot-commuting etiquette. The following is an edited transcript.

What is a telepresence robot?

A telepresence robot is like a two-way video-audio system on wheels. So you can see people; they can see you. You can talk to people, they can talk to you, and you can move it around remotely. So you can drive into peoples’ cubicles, drive into the conference room, drive into the lab, drive out to see what they’re doing.

Why would someone need that?

People that are working with a remote team need it the most — so, often there’s a team that works together where most of the people are together in one place, but one person is in Europe or on the other side of the country.

So it’s really about letting the remote person join in the conversations wherever the conversations are happening.

In general, how have the employees accepted it?

For the first minute or so, we’re talking about, “Hey, I’m in a robot.” But after that, we basically get down to business, to whatever it is we were going to talk about.

I talked to a couple other people who worked in robotics, and they said one of the big challenges is getting everyday people to accept a robot wheeling around in their space. I wonder what you make of that.

Yeah. It’s a big challenge. It has a lot to do with the design of the robot. A lot of robots in the past have been big, heavy beeping things, where everyone had to get out of their way. The new generation of robots is light and unobtrusive in an office environment. That makes a big difference.

Tell me about the design of this particular robot. It doesn’t look exactly like a person. Is that intentional?

It was somewhat intentional. We actually had a previous version that did look more human-like: It had more of a torso and more of a face on it. And it was confusing, because people wanted to be talking to a robot, and they wanted it to have a robot personality, so we ended up with something that sort of occupies the same space as a person — it’s 5 feet tall, you know, and … people will include it in a circle of conversation around a white board.

Is this a new area of research, or has it been around for a while?

It’s been around for quite a long time, but only for very specialized uses because you couldn’t do it over a long distance. For 20 years or so, this kind of thing has been in use for bomb-disposal robots, where it might save your life to be 100 yards away. But it’s only recently that it’s been practical to do it over the Internet, because the Internet was fast enough to do it. You’re streaming video.

I read that the receptionist in the Anybots office sometimes telecommutes [via robot]. What is that like for people who come in from outside the office and are greeted by a robot?

Very quickly, her personality comes through, and she puts the visitors at ease and offers them drinks. It’s all about the way people approach it. If you approach it as “We’re here to have a business conversation,” it quickly gets to that.

Can the receptionist robot actually go get people those drinks?

The robot doesn’t have hands. So, you know, it’s really just showing them where the fridge is. But that seems to be good enough.

Where do you see this going in the future?

Mainly just more wide use of it in more situations. If people are working all day in an office, it’s definitely nice if you can save them a commute.

Do you see uses for this outside of the office?

Definitely. One of the big uses is in factories. We use it in our factory, which is actually just on the other side of town. But so many factories are in Asia.

The advantage is, you can have your most experienced engineer go look at that thing coming off the production line instantly, rather than having to send someone there who has to be a generalist and has to spend a day flying there.

What about remote tourism?

It’s a fascinating idea. We haven’t really seen it happen yet, but I’m sure that it will. Like a lot of things — like when e-mail first came out, people only used it for sending serious documents, and now people will use it to send one-sentence things to the guy on the other side of the office. They do that all the time.

So I think, as it becomes more common, people are going to use it for more frivolous purposes.

Do you warn people when you’re coming to a meeting as a robot?

I never do.

How come?

I don’t feel I have to. That’s kind of my prerogative to not have to drive somewhere.

Do you think, eventually, this will be a consumer technology?

Yes, both we and other companies are working on sort of lower-cost, consumer versions.

How far out are those?

There is one available now called Rovio, that’s like a $300 thing. It’s small. It’s like 6 inches tall. So it’s better for talking to kids than being taken seriously in an office environment.

Are these robots going to change the relationship between people and machines?

People will just think of it as just another gadget, like they think of their cell phone. They don’t think very much about the fact that they’re carrying this amazing piece of technology in their pocket all the time. It’s just something everyone does. And I think telepresence robots are going to be like that in five years. It’s just one of those things you expect to see.

What’s the biggest technical challenge in this field?

Definitely, Wi-Fi range is one of the big problems. When you run out of Wi-Fi range, it has to stop and back up a little bit. And the big change there that’s coming is that WiMAX, or 4G, will be deployed in most American cities, and then telepresence robots will be able to be deployed anywhere in the city.

Have you used the QB outside?

We take it out the front door all the time. … We have to set up a big antenna to make it work. We’ve driven it around outside and talked to people. It’s quite pleasant.

Is it rugged enough to handle outside terrain?

We designed it thinking about offices, but it actually does very well outdoors. It has 12-inch-diameter wheels, sort of the smallest size of bicycle wheels. And so it handles outdoor terrain pretty well.

When is this going to be available?

It’s shipping in the fall, and you can pre-order it now on the website.

How many pre-orders have you gotten?

We’re not releasing numbers yet.

Have you started producing them?

Yeah, we’re in pre-production, and we’ve built 25 of them so far. And there are a lot more coming in the fall.

Once a week, the staff at Hunch stops work a little early. They leave their computers and convene around sofas in the back of the office in New Yorks Flatiron district. They crack some beers and crank up the music. And then they pull out the board games.

Caterina Fake, Hunchs chief product officer, instigated the weekly game night shortly after she arrived at the Internet startup in June 2008. But on this particular spring night, the whole thing threatens to fall apart. Fake has brought Dominion, a game with such byzantine rules something to do with monarchs using gold, militias, and witchcraft to seize unclaimed land that even the MIT-trained engineers struggle to make sense of it. Fake furrows her brow as she studies the rule book. After 20 minutes, it looks like her coworkers are ready to forget the whole thing and head home, but Fake cajoles them into staying just a little longer. Could somebody turn this music down? she asks, shooting a glance at the office stereo blaring Girl Talk. I cant concentrate.

A few minutes later, the crisis has been averted. Fake and her cohorts have deciphered the rules and the game is in full swing. But Fake isnt playing; she hands off her cards to one of the engineers and retires to the pizza table. She doesnt care much about winning all the land in Dominions imaginary realm. She just wanted to get the party started.

Thats what Fake does best: Tend social sparks until they ignite and become full-fledged communities. You can see this talent in the weekly hootenannies she hosts at her house. I used to invite people over to make crafts you know, Christmas stockings, that kind of thing, she says. Im just a very social person.

An excerpt from ‘Mapping Desire: Exploring the Science of Online Recommendations’ with Caterina Fake, Hunch Cofounder, at the Wired Business Conference.

Connecting people to one another is not just Fakes hobby she has made it her career. As the cofounder of Flickr, the landmark photography site, Fake provided a place for shutterbugs to share their work; they have uploaded more than 4 billion pictures. It was a seminal service that helped launch the era of user-generated content, spurring entrepreneurs to build Web sites and businesses based on volunteer contributions. In addition to influencing sites like Facebook which allows members to post, share, and tag photos Flickrs impact can be seen in services like Twitter and Foursquare, which rely heavily on the kind of group dynamics that it helped popularize. And Fake herself became a Silicon Valley celebrity before selling Flickr to Yahoo for an estimated $35 million back in 2005 and receding from the spotlight.

Now, with Hunch, Fake is back, and shes using her social skills to tackle one of the most vexing problems in computer science: online recommendations. The smartest engineers at the most innovative companies Amazon.com, Pandora, Netflix, Google have spent years trying to perfect algorithms that will suggest the perfect book, song, movie, or product. Dozens of other companies have claimed to have discovered the magic formula for driving consumer behavior online, only to find themselves stymied. They have tried everything from tracking customer purchases to psychological profiles.

The few that have succeeded have hewed to relatively narrow niches. Engineers at streaming-music service Pandora built a detailed database that describes the unique characteristics of more than 750,000 songs. Netflix crowdsourced the problem, offering a $1 million prize to whoever could improve its recommendation algorithm by 10 percent. (The prize was claimed in 2009.) Yet despite those efforts, online recommendations are still hit or miss ask anyone who has purchased a baby shower gift on Amazon only to be deluged weeks or months later with suggestions for strollers and bibs.

Fakes solution is uniquely, well, Fakeian: Get people talking about themselves their opinions, tastes, beliefs, idiosyncrasies. Then, once they have shared enough information, mine that data for correlations that provide precisely tailored recommendations for each user. It is a quietly radical premise, implying that our tastes are defined not only by what we buy or what weve liked in the past but by who we are as people.

Hunch learns about its members through Teach Hunch About You questions. These queries can cover anything exercise regimens, the ethics of SeaWorld, zombies and the more of them people answer, the more complete a profile Hunch can create. (Since the site launched in June 2009, it has collected 55 million answers to these questions from its 1 million active users.) Once Hunchs algorithm collects enough data, it can start finding surprising correlations. For instance, people who swat flies have a thing for USA Today. People who believe in alien abductions are more likely than nonbelievers to drink Pepsi. People who eat fresh fruit every day are more likely to desire Canons pricey EOS 7D camera. And respondents who cut their sandwiches diagonally rather than vertically are more likely to prefer mens Ray-Ban sunglasses.

If you we are to believe the latest coming from sources dishing to Bloomberg, RIM is going to be launching a challenger to Apples iPad sometime in November, although no specific release date was given.

Of course.

They did however mention a name as well as some of its specifications. First and foremost, they plan on calling the device, the Blackpad, a name that surfaced when it was discovered that RIM had purchase the blackpad.com domain name.

Horrible name, lets hope they change it.

Here is how the tablet, companion tablet mind you, is described:

The device will have roughly the same dimensions as the iPad, which has a 9.7-inch diagonal screen, said the two people who wouldnt be identified because the plans havent been made public. The device will include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology that will allow people to use their BlackBerry smartphones to connect to the Internet, the two people said.

So, thats that.

And as an FYI, the report also confirmed that BlackBerry and AT&T will be introducing the not-so-secret BlackBerry 9800 slider next week at their joint event.

I have a hard time seeing the BlackPad give the iPad any kind of competition especially if it doesnt have a 3G version.

I guess well see in November though.
